The Solid Waste Management Facility for Drum Country provides efficient, environmentally responsible disposal of non-hazardous solid waste. The state-of-the-art, double-lined facility is owned and operated by the Development Authority of the North Country. It began operation in 1992 and operates in full compliance with all applicable New York State Department of Environmental Conservation regulations. Advantages of this facility include:
- Top-of-the-line equipment,
- Segregated tipping areas for special materials,
- Extensive use of alternative daily cover materials,
- Computerized weighing and billing, and
- Fast turnaround time.
Meeting Future Needs
Initiatives that will allow the facility to meet future needs of the region include:
- Completion of a new 10-acre waste cell to accommodate ongoing disposal needs.
- Southeastern cell extension that will significantly enhance the landfill’s disposal capacity and provide a sustained competitive solid waste disposal tipping fee for future generations.
- Methane gas-to-energy facility operated by Innovative Energy Systems which turns methane gas generated from the waste into electricity that is sold to the power grid.
- Utilize waste heat generated by the production of the electricity at the gas-to-energy facility as a form of green business.
